Visit them at http://voice.conncoll.edu to see our top three stories of the week, and keep an eye out for future changes to the site. This is a great step forward in getting student publishing at Conn more accessible. Hopefully the site will soon add a "comments" section for student responses to articles.

NESCAC Blog

A group of NESCAC students have started NESCAC Blog, a news site and forum for all things NESCAC (New England Small College Athletic Conference). The idea is based around similar blogs such as Ivy Gate, an established website known for its snarky commentary on the Ivy League.

NESCAC Blog, as a new forum is yet to stir any controversy. I have to imagine once it catches-on there will be empty "our school is the best!" comments among great mud slinging.

The site, however, has great potential which I hope is met. Each of the eleven NESCAC schools undertake very different student life initiatives. Perhaps a forum consisting of conversation between students from myriad liberal arts colleges will proliferate ideas for student life and academic events, among other topics of discourse.

Unlike forums like ConnCollConfessional, one has to register for NESCAC Blog. Its an easy process and may limit slanderous or offensive statements. I hope for the success of this blog if not for engaging information then at least for worthwhile procrastination.

Endowment Loses Forty Million Dollars

The latest copy of The Voice reveled that Conn's endowment lost $40 million because of investments effected negatively by the financial recession. More troubling than this realization is the reported concealment by the administration.

This story was first reported by the New London Day before anyone in the college community received word. There STILL has not been an official statement made by anyone in the administration to the college community. Perhaps this is due, in part, to efforts to avoid harming the college's capital campaign.
Another reason for concealment may be that the impact of a decreased endowment is particularly significant at Conn as a small, private college--especially in relation to similar college's. The number one or, perhaps, only aspect setting Conn behind "peer" institutions in rankings (ie status) is financial resources. Conn's admissions rate is low; professors are well-published; and the campus is beautiful. A $40 million drop to our relatively meager, previously* $225 million endowment is an especially large set-back for an institution trying to catch-up to its "peers". The endowment of the next lowest NESCAC college (in terms of financial resources) was $50 million larger than Conn's as of before the recession.
I look forward to reading the e-mail from President Higdon most certainly arriving in our in-boxes at some time this week. Discussion following The Voice's piece has made administrative silence on Conn's financial issues the "elephant in the room" on campus. Many colleges are facing financial challenges and addressing them swiftly and openly. It is time for Connecticut College to follow suite.

Hygienic Art XXX (A ConnCollegiate Recommended Event)

Hygienic Art in downtown New London is hosting its annual XXX exhibit this coming weekend. I know we post a broad spectrum of events in New London on this blog, but this event is highly recommended. XXX is essentially an open art showing with various forums around downtown New London and centered at Hygienic Art of Bank Street. The annual Hygienic Art Exhibition is celebrating its 30th year. The event is modeled after the Salon de Independants held annually in Paris since 1884.

Gallery openings are at Hygienic, Golden Street, Take Out, MUSE Gallery (102 Golden Street, off Bank), and 140 Below (140B State Street), etc. In addition to studio art, musical performances and film showings are also featured in the day's events: "The Rock Fixxx" is happening at the Carriage House (41 Golden Street), and a "Cabaret" is at the Oasis Pub (16 Bank Street)

Additionally, an Indie Film Festival starts at noon at the Carriage House.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo At Conn College

Ladysmith Black Mambazo is a male chorus from South Africa best know for their contribution of their unique vocal sound on Paul Simon's "Graceland" album. The album introduced Ladysmith to a wider audience after having already received critical acclaim in South Africa for over a decade.  The group recently released a live DVD and performs at Conn in early February in Palmer Auditorium. Perhaps Ladysmith will benefit from the afro-pop resurrection instigated by Vampire Weekend (a group influenced by Paul Simon's "Graceland".)

Sadie Nash Leadership Project

This is a work opportunity for women in their last two years of college.

A representative from the program writes:

[Sadie Nash Leadership Program is] seeking applicants for the Dean position during our 6 week Summer Institute. Deans are women from all over the U.S who are in their last 2 years of college.

The SNLP Summer Institute is a program serving as an opportunity for young women to take time to look at their own (potential) leadership and the leadership of others while developing a strong community of female peers. The youth meet women Leaders; attend challenging and inspiring courses/workshops; while strengthening, empowering and equipping themselves to be agents for change in their world!

-Deans work for 9 weeks beginning 6/15/09 – 8/16/09, including 3 weeks of training.
-Deans work in either the SNLP Summer Institute in New York City or Newark, NJ
-Deans will have a chance to teach, lead, and plan different aspects of the program.

Returning to New London

We are gearing up for next semester, and have some material from break:

Conn College was mentioned in this New York Times article about private colleges fearing a drop in enrollment due to the economic climate. The article explains the false notion that private colleges are always more expensive than public colleges. The article, instead, states that private colleges often have more aid set aside than public universities that rely on inconsistent state funding.

Conn College's indie rock ambassadors, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, are booked at the Brooklyn Academy of Music as part of the Sounds Like Brooklyn Music festival. The "festival", which is really more of a concert series, serves to highlight standout Brooklyn-dwelling musicians. Tickets are currently available on the BAM website.

Conn has raised a whopping $2,000,000.00 (biting sarcasm) since going public with our capital campaign with the unfortunate timing of having done so in October. It is a credit to Higdon and the Office of Advancement, however, that $112,000,000.00 has been raised in total to date, and in such a short period of time. Our fund raising efforts began years after many other colleges had already taken-on similar $200,000,000.00 campaigns (see Skidmore, Dickinson and Colby.) [*Note that shortly after this post the progress mark on fundraising reached $3,000,000.00 more than was listed during the original writing. This means a total of $5,000,000.00 has now been raised since late October.]

Asayo's Wish Benefit Concert

"Watch great on-campus groups and help Ugandan orphans! The Asayo's Wish Foundation is a foundation committed to a small rural village in Kaberamaido, Uganda. It seeks to serve the community of Kaberamaido in sustainable, tangible ways. The foundation also houses 150 orphans, and feeds nearly 400 children daily.

A group of Connecticut College students will be traveling to Kabermaido next March to provide healthcare to the orphans and villagers from the surrounding area. All proceeds will go towards medical supplies for the kids."

Financial Strains and Higher Education

President Higdon's latest mass e-mail addressed Conn College's financial situation. For those who have not read it, it assured that because of safe investments our endowment is stable. While Higdon's e-mail was primarily concerned with the College's endowment and faculty, very little was written about the future of individuals who are now unable to pay for our very expensive (see earlier posting) college tuition.

Conn isn't alone in having to re-think plans and daily operations. From capital campaign delays to tuition freezes This article, recently published in the New York Times, provides a thorough overview of what a difficult economic climate means for colleges and universities across the nation.

Globe Feature on New London

This story, about New London's "revival", is a few months old, but unless you read the Boston Globe travel section (no one reads the Boston Globe travel section) you probably missed it. It highlights various improvements in New London, as well as the variety of the available restaurants and shops. Conn College Breaking the Bank

The consumerist has published its list of most expensive colleges in America for 2008-2009 and it turns out that Conn College is the 5th most expensive school in the country. Sarah Lawrence College is the only liberal arts school that is more expensive, and our tuition is slightly higher than the next two liberal arts schools on the list, Bates and Skidmore, bringing about the ever-painful question: am I getting what I pay for?

Ultimately, the most expensive schools tend to be Northeast liberal arts colleges who need to provide myriad resources with a fragment of the tuition income of larger universities. Administration beware that with the label "5th most expensive school in the country" students are bound to complain about anything and everything (I'm paying all this for Harris mongolian beef?); though, it appears the cash is enabling fruitful campus improvements.

For those of you registered to vote in New London, here is what you need to know:

1) You need proof of residency at Conn College:
This includes pay stubs, postmarked envelopes, and anything else that is sent to your Conn College mailbox from an outside address. It must also includes both your name and the address, 270 Mohegan Ave.

2) Valid ID: such as driver’s license or passport

You will not be admitted to the polls if you are wearing campaign gear.

For those who don't drive, or don't think you will be able to find New London High, OVCS will be providing rides every half hour from 8AM-8PM from Cro--how easy!

Conn's Diwali celebration has been classily renamed Intoxicasian Night, in turn, highlighting a broader range of Asian cultures. The show presents Bollywood dances, the traditional "lion dance", as well as other dances from various Asian cultures. There is also a charity component in support of Shelter-Associates. In the past, the Diwali incarnation of this event has quickly sold-out. Tickets are currently on sale in Cro.

Great Skaught at The Oasis Pub

Conn's favorite and only Ska band, Great Skaught, is performing at The Oasis Pub on Bank Street this coming Monday night. As anyone who has seen them in action at Friday Nights Live or at last year's Floralia knows, they put on a party-centric and high energy show--their energy will only further be felt in the cozy confines of The Oasis Pub. Great Skaught will be joined by fellow reggae/ska groups Deal's Gone Bad and Royal City Riot.

Humans vs. Zombies

Humans vs. Zombies, the campus-wide tag game that hit Conn last semester, is coming back! For those of you who weren't here/didn't hear about it, HvZ is a game played at numerous colleges that splits people into teams of humans or zombies. The objective is to stay alive! Tune-in to "The Quad"

A group of Blackstoners have created a series of short films entitled The Quad. The first episode features an awkward beginning-of-semester dorm meet and greet gone terribly wrong. As far as the quality of the show--I will leave such judgments to you. Its worth your ten minutes and the fact that these guys are attempting an independent production should be applauded.

Professors to Discuss Election's Global Implications

Professors from Conn's government department are hosting and participating in a panel to discuss the global consequences of the upcoming presidential election. The panel will be moderated by Professor James and features:

-Professor Borer, speaking on the election's human rights implications.

-Professor Dawson, speaking on the election's implications for diplomacy related to climate change.

-Professor, Hybel, speaking on the implications for South America.

-Professor Patton, speaking on the implications for Europe.

-Professor Rose, speaking on the election's implication for security policy.

-Professor Tian, speaking on the implications relating to U.S.-China relations and North Korea's nuclear program.

Sarge's Comics Owner Arrested

The owner of Sarge's Comics, Robert Miller, was sentenced last Thursday for one count of copyright infringement, to which he plead guilty. His store, located at 124 State Street in New London, was searched in 2005 after an undercover federal agent purchased an unauthorized DVD from the store.

Miller has been sentenced to six months of house arrest, and two years of probation, as well as 100 hours of community service and a restitution of $9,575 paid to the Motion Picture Association of America.

The store, which is frequented by many Conn students, is expected to remain open despite the sentencing of its owner.

Photographs Needed for Underexposed Magazine

Underexposed is releasing its first Fall issue in mid-October and needs new photographic submissions. The student-run photography magazine is in its fourth semester of publication and provides a great opportunity to display work to the greater Conn community.

Submission requirements are as follows:

-Black and white

-Large resolution (min: 1600px)

-Include the photo's name, location, and camera used.

Submission deadline: October 1st

Conn Loses Potential Reality Television Star

Last Spring, Conn accepted twelve-year-old prodigy Colin Carlson into the class of 2012. After learning, however, that he would not be allowed to reside in, or be associated with a residence hall, he jumped-ship to UConn's honor program. Carlson was disappointed with the college's decision, stating that he "just wanted to be part of the liberal arts community and that it wouldn't have been possible without a dorm." It should have occured to Carlson that he wouldn't have been part of the "liberal arts community" not for lack of house affiliation, but because he is twelve... Freeman on a Thursday night would eat you alive, young Colin.

Carlson choosing not to matriculate ultimately worked out well for the college. It garnered significant national publicity without placing responsibility on the administration to keep tabs on a child.

I believe more could have been gained. The administration should place him in Abbey House and produce a reality television show chronicling his transformation ("it all started when he took his first sip of PBR..."). Hopefully, admissions accepts thirteen-year-old transfers--then we can ride the loss-of-innocence-train to #1 in U.S. News and World Report.

Tell Me What I Don't Already Know

"Connecticut College, or Conn, is academically rigorous, with a beautiful but insular campus." -Unigo's synopsis of Conn.

Unigo.com is one of hundreds of college guide websites targeted at high school students. What makes it different is the fact that it is freestanding (thanks to advertisements) rather than supporting a book and is quite thorough as a result. Currently, Conn is one of six schools featured on Unigo's homepage. The Conn page offers an impressively complete overview of the college and includes pictures, film, blog links, and college news--all brought to you by "campus reps".

What I found most interesting about the site is its write-ups which are based entirely on student-surveys--in our case, over 120 filled-out by the student body, resulting in overwhelmingly positive reviews. The site reaffirms my notion of a satisfied student body at Conn--a notion diminished after reading CollCollConfessional.

After completing the college application process, I looked forward to never again reading undergraduate college guides. Despite this sentiment, Unigo is worth the attention of any current college student because it contains material written by our peers and reveals diverse conceptions of our school.

OnStage Series Brings "A Comedy of Errors" to Palmer Auditorium

New York-based, Aquila Theater Company is coming to Palmer this Saturday to perform Shakespeare's "A Comedy of Errors". The company has presented a broad array of works ranging from the Illiad to Catch 22. Their performances of Shakespeare garner generally positive reviews while striving for accessibility.
